Cat Raia

My goal in my artwork is to take from the ever- shifting surroundings encompassing myself to make clearer sense of the world we live in . I long to uproot the fears of the masses, the lies of the State, the myths of our childhoods. To me, in order to create something new, I must undo a lie. Maybe this involves first reinforcing it, and then bringing the viewer into the light, or maybe it’s crashing through preconceived notions with a bang. Whatever it may be, my goal is to make the audience ask “Whyyy….” in a hushed smirk or murmur. The ideas I am yanking like weeds were there already, I’m just helping to pull them out. Through sporadic application of colors on top of intentionally chosen and collage photographs, I aim to bring a precise and biting dark humor while simultaneously the scene will contain random large areas of a color and lines. I cannot help but keep the viewer entwined in my web of pattern and line for it is the most natural way in which my mind materializes. When creating, I find I am working my way out of a mess of lines and shapes, somehow finding myself freed up at the end of it, while also consistently feeling as though something is missing. Whether working in watercolor, mixed media, video, or installation, my main goal as an artist is to keep my audience as busy as I find I am keeping myself in day-to-day life. I hope I keep them on their toes.
